- Trevor, do you like the beach?
- I love the beach. The beach is great.
- OK. Why do you love the beach?
- It's nice fresh air, beautiful water, you can play in the sand, and my hobby is surfing, so I like to go surfing.
- Oh..nice. How often do you go surfing?
- I try to go as often as possible, usually every weekend.
- OK. When do you go to the beach? Saturday? Sunday?
- Usually early on a Saturday morning. Try to beat the crowds.
- OK. What do you do at the beach besides surfing?
- Oh, just relax on the sand, watch the people, maybe have a swim, throw a frisbee.
- OK.
- Things like that!
- How long have you been surfing?
- Since I was ten years old.
- Wow, since you were ten. That's great! -- What do you take to the beach, when you go?
- A towel, and my hat, my sunscreen, my surfboard, wetsuit, some food and water, and maybe a radio.
- OK. Now, you are from Australia. How are the beaches different in Australia than Japan?
- The beaches are much bigger and white sand, clean water, very nice.
- OK. Well, sounds good. Thanks a lot, Trevor.
- OK. Catch you later.

Nội dung video
Thuận: Who was that guy you were talking to at the bar? It looked like he was hitting on you.
Thảo: Yeah, we struck up a conversation, and eventually he asked me out. I gave him my number, but I’m not sure if I’ll actually go out with him.
Thuận: Oh? How come?
Thảo: He’s nice, but I just don’t feel like we have much chemistry – so I don’t want to lead him on.
Thuận: Well, don’t be too quick to judge. My last boyfriend and I didn’t hit it off right away – I only started to fall for him after we went out a few times and I got to know him better. We were together for 3 years.
Thảo: So why’d you split up? If you don’t mind my asking.
Thuận: Not at all. We just started to drift apart – different interests, different plans for the future. The breakup was mutual.
Thảo: Ah, that’s great. My last relationship was a nightmare – I hooked up with a guy at a New Year’s party and we were together for six months – but we were constantly fighting and making up. I don’t know how I put up with him for so long.
Thuận: How’d it end?
Thảo: He cheated on me – I caught him making out with his ex. He begged me for another chance, but I know he was just trying to jerk me around – so I said no.
Thuận: Ugh! Good for you.
Thảo: Heh, thanks. So how about you – are you going out with anyone at the moment?
Thuận: Oh, I’ve gone on a few dates here and there, but nothing serious. To be honest, I’m not really interested in settling down just yet – I’m enjoying the single life too much!
Transcript:
Let’s learn the phrasal verbs from the dialog.
First, Thuận says it looked like the guy was hitting on Thảo. To hit on someone is to say or do things that demonstrate romantic or sexual interest in that person. It’s usually a combination of comments and gestures as well as the way you look at the other person. Another way to say this is that the guy was flirting with Thảo.
Thảo says the guy asked her out – to ask someone out is to invite the person to go on a date (a romantic encounter). We often say “asked her out for…” and then the activity:
- He asked her out for lunch / dinner.
- He asked her out for coffee.
- He asked her out for drinks.
- He asked her out for a movie.
Thảo then says she’s not sure if she likes the guy, and she doesn’t want to lead him on – this means to provide false hope or expectation to the other person. So if she pretended to be romantically interested even though she really wasn’t, this would be leading him on.
Thuận then says that she and her last boyfriend didn’t hit it off right away – this means they didn’t have a special connection immediately. If you hit it off with someone, it means you like each other and you have great social “chemistry” from the first moment you meet.
However, with time she began to fall for him – the phrasal verb “fall for” means “fall in love with.”
Thảo then asks why Thuận and her last boyfriend split up – this means to separate, to end the romantic relationship. You can say split up or break up – and breakup can also be used as a noun.
Thuận says that the breakup was because she and her boyfriend drifted apart – this means they slowly started to go in different directions over time.
Thảo’s last relationship was a nightmare (which means it was really terrible). It started when she hooked up with someone at a party. The phrasal verb hook up with someone can be used a slang expression meaning to have sex with someone, especially someone you just met, or someone you only stay with for one night.
However, in Thảo’s case she stayed with the boyfriend for six months, when they were constantly fighting and making up – that means reconciling and restoring peace in the relationship after a fight. It was a difficult relationship, and Thảo says she doesn’t know how she put up with him for so long. The phrasal verb “put up with” someone means to tolerate a difficult, annoying, or unpleasant person.
The relationship ended when the boyfriend cheated on Thảo – that means he was kissing or having sex with another woman. Thảo discovered him making out with his ex-girlfriend (kissing her very passionately).
The boyfriend wanted another chance with Thảo, but Thảo knew he was trying to jerk her around – that means to manipulate her or use her for his own advantage – so she broke up with him (ended the relationship).
Thảo asks Thuận if Thuận is going out with anyone. The phrasal verb go out with can mean to go out on a date with someone once, or it can mean to be in a relationship for an extended period of time. In this second case, we usually use it in the present continuous – so Thảo is asking if Thuận is currently in a relationship.
Thuận says she isn’t in a serious relationship because she’s not interested in settling down yet– in this context, settle down means to be in a long-term stable relationship (for example, getting married and having kids, and living a “typical” family life).

Nội dung câu chuyện
- So, I’ve got a question. I was at this event the other night and I had a pair of jeans on. I looked around and I felt a little self-conscious. When do you think it’s OK to wear jeans and when is it not?
- This is a complicated question, I think, because there are jeans and there are jeans. Right? Jeans have become such an industry. The denim industry is so big that there are high-fashion jeans that you’d probably be OK wearing to an event of a certain type. Versus if you’re just grabbing a pair of 501s… that’s maybe a little bit too casual for anything other than working in the garage on the weekend.
- Well, I had the professional look going on that night.
- They had the nice sparkle thread in them.
- No, I don’t do that. I don’t go that far.
- Cool. I’ve got to be honest with you. One of my big pet peeves is buying the pre-torn jeans. That makes zero sense to me.
- Wear them enough and that’ll happen. It’s funny how they could be considered a “dress pant” when they became popular purely out of function.
- I would say the fact that I could basically wear nothing but jeans is just a fulfillment of their function at the highest state of performance.
Discussion
Jeff recently went to an event wearing jeans. He tells Mason that looking around at the other guests, he felt uncomfortable. He wasn’t sure that it was OK to be in jeans even though he thought his clothes were professional. Jeff asks Mason when he thinks it’s OK to wear jeans and when it isn’t.
His answer? It depends. There are all kinds of jeans today, and some are definitely OK to wear when you’re going out. Masons points out that the fashion industry makes jeans that are very different from the kind you’d wear while working around the house. Basically, there are jeans for every occasion.
Jeans can cost a few dollars at a second-hand store, or thousands of dollars from a famous designer. It’s amazing how one type of clothing can function for so many situations.
Is it always OK to wear jeans? When is it not OK? Where have you seen people wearing jeans that seemed improper or inconsiderate?

3. Which word does not belong?

Ron: Hi, I'm Ron from Hawaii. I'm here with Mari from Japan. Today we will be talking about abilities. So, Mari, are you a good cook? Mari: I like to cook, more specifically, I like to cook for people. I like to have people over and eat with people. I don't really like to eat alone, so I don't like to cook for myself. I like to cook for other people, but more than cooking I like to bake. Ron: Baking. What do you like to bake? Mari: Cookies and brownies and cake. Ron: That sounds very good. I would like to eat one of your brownies. OK, next, are you a good singer? Mari: I am terrible at singing. I don't like going to karaoke and I don't like to sing. I like music, but I can't sing for my life. I, yesterday, or I guess in class it was a students birthday and I made my students sing Happy Birthday but they wouldn't start so I had to start them off singing and my voice was so bad, they started laughing at me, so I'm just a terrible singer. Ron: That's funny. OK, next. Are you a good dancer? Mari: No, I'm not a good dancer. I can't dance at all. I used to when I was younger, my parents would enroll me in ballet classes, so I did ballet for six years but I am not very good at dancing. Ron: So, you're a teacher now right? So, were you a good student when you were a student? Mari: I was a good student because I'm a dork. No, yeah, I think I was a good student. I tried hard in all of my classes. I always did my homework. I was always focused and took notes during class. If I didn't understand something, I would either ask questions in class or speak to the teacher or professor after class. I always really liked learning and so I think that's why I was a really good student. Ron: And athletics? Were you a good athlete, and are you a good athlete now? Mari: That's a tricky question. I like sports, and I like playing sports. I don't think I'm a very good athlete, probably compared to you, I'm probably not, but I really enjoy playing sports. In high school, I played soccer. I ran cross-country. I played ice-hockey and a little bit of lacrosse. Ron: And which one was your favorite sport? Mari: My favorite sport was ice-hockey. Ron: Interesting. | Vocabularymore specifically Ví dụ: - I like to cook, more specifically, I like to cook for people. And what about concerts? Do you enjoy going to concerts? I don't go to music concerts. I don't think I've ever been to one actually but I like to go see musicals and I also like to go to sporting events. Nice talking with you Mari. |

Hi, I'm Mari. I'm here with my friend Ron. Today, we're talking about food. So Ron, what's your favorite cuisine? My favorite cuisine has to be Hawaiian food. I grew up eating Hawaiian food so every special occasion we had Hawaiian food, so now when I eat Hawaiian food, it always brings back good memories.
What exactly is Hawaiian food?
Traditional Hawaiian food is usually cooked under the ground in a hole with hot rocks and it cooks for maybe six hours or seven hours and when you take it out, it's very salty because we use a lot of salt and it tastes really good ... usually meat ... usually pork and other vegetables like taro and potato.
So then what's your favorite Hawaiian dish?
My favorite Hawaiian dish is called Lao-Lao. It's pork or fish wrapped in leaves and put inside the underground oven and it's very salty and very good.
So the flavor is just salt?
The flavor is salt and also the leaf flavor that it's wrapped in.
What's your favorite dessert or junk food?
My favorite dessert has to be cake and ice-cream together. I love to eat cake and ice-cream together.
What's your favorite ice-cream flavor?
My favorite ice-cream flavor is strawberry, and I like to eat that with chocolate cake.
Mm, sounds good. Do you like vegetables?
Not so much. I don't like to eat vegetables but I can eat them if somebody cooks them for me.
What's your favorite vegetable?
My favorite vegetable ... I don't have a favorite vegetable but I can eat vegetables like asparagus, broccoli, carrots. Those types of things.
Do you eat your vegetables raw ... like salad ... or do you prefer them cooked?
I prefer them cooked.
Thanks Ron.
You're welcome.
